What is retatrutide?

Retatrutide is a new weight loss medication potentially coming onto the market, with research trials showing impressive results for weight and diabetes control. The medication has not been approved for use just yet but this blog post is going to go into what you need to know about it.

What is retatrutide and how does it work?

Retatrutide is a once a week injectable medication that can help with weight loss, improve type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, and lower cholesterol.

It is a triple agent, meaning it works in 3 ways. It is a:

  • GLP-1 receptor agonist - helps to increase fullness and lower appetite
  • GIP agonist - helps to stimulate insulin release which controls blood sugar levels
  • Glucagon agonist - helps to increase metabolism and promote fat burning

This is opposed to other options like Wegovy (semaglutide)  which is a single agent working only on GLP-1 receptors and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) which is a dual agent working on GLP-1 and GIP receptors.

It’s being tested in 3 doses: 4mg, 9mg, and 12mg.

How much weight can you lose with retatrutide?

Retatrutide has shown up to 20% total body weight loss at the highest dose over 80 weeks. In the lowest dose, the average total weight loss was 12.7% over 80 weeks.

This is substantial weight loss and comes with other health benefits like improved quality of life, improved blood sugar control, and lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

What to keep in mind with retatrutide?

It’s worth remembering that retatrutide is not approved for sale in the UK or USA yet. Testing is still ongoing to ensure its safety and reliability.

There are reports of people buying it online but there is no way to verify exactly what you’re buying or what dose it is. It’s simply not worth the risk when other effective medications are available.

When approved for sale, retatrutide will have similar side effects to the other weight loss medications like nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhoea.

This blog post does not substitute medical advice and you should always discuss with your doctor before taking a new medication.
